DESTINATION - SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
BIRD SIGHTINGS Provided by SRQ Bird Alert
Intro to Bird Sightings:
If there were only one Birding Capital of America, Florida could make a strong case.
With extensive wilderness, diverse habitat and the geographic span of subtropical and temperate climates, more than 500 bird
species have been documented.
Spring and Fall, Florida becomes a haven for tens of millions of songbirds seeking respite and refueling before and after
long trans-Gulf and trans-Caribbean migration. These colorful birds include warblers, vireos, thrushes, orioles, tanagers,
buntings and grosbeaks. Woodlands, backyard gardens and urban green spaces provide fruit, nectar and seeds to replenish
body fat before migrating north in Spring or South to warm winter havens.
Common year-round residents include the Brown Pelican, Magnificent Frigate Bird, Yellow Crowned Night Heron, Mottled Duck,
Wood Stork, Osprey, Red-tailed Hawk, Limpkin, Killdeer, Least Sandpiper, Belted Kingfisher, Pileated Woodpecker, Piping
Plover and Northern Flicker. Florida is second only to Alaska in the number of eagles.
Endangered, threatened or of special concern species include the American Oystercatcher, Least Tern, Snowy Plover, Black
Skimmer, Peregrine Falcon, Merlin, Cooper’s Hawk, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Reddish
Egret, Barred Owl and Black Crowned Night Heron. Most sought-after by birders are the rare Florida burrowing owl, the
Florida scrub-jay, and the snail kite.
Mild winter temperatures and lots of sunshine are an added bonus for viewers and viewees. Bird watchers have a variety of
"habitats" from which to observe and photograph their favorite subjects. A partial list includes mangrove forests,
lagoons, mud flats, oyster bars, sandy beaches and dunes, pine flat-woods, oak scrub, ponds and wetlands.
