ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDEN... EDITOR'S REVIEW!

This testament to the late American sculptor Ann Weaver Norton, second wife of Norton Museum founder Ralph H. Norton provides an insightful glimpse of the artist as she lived and worked to create monolithic sculptures within a botanical oasis. Situated in the historic district of El Cid and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden was opened to the public by Ann (1905-1982) in 1977.

Rarely do we see an artist’s work displayed in its true and intended surroundings. The ability to explore her home, workplace and grounds provides a unique, insightful glimpse of the artist as she lived and worked. The living space of the main house is dedicated to rotating works of invited regional artists. The studio remains as she left it with over 100 works in bronze, stone and wood encompassing more than 4 decades of evolving artistic periods.

The 1.7 acre gardens planned by Ann and Sir Peter Smithers were designed in a natural English style. Visitors can wander simple pathways as monolithic sculptures reveal themselves one by one, standing silently among a forest of trees and palms. Garden enthusiasts will be rewarded by a stunning collection of over 300 species of rare palms and native plants.

After wondering and exploring, guests are encouraged to return to the main house where staff is available to answer questions and provide stories regarding the life of Ann Norton.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Those who are physically challenged or wheelchair bound will have great difficulty touring the home and gardens. Strollers may also have trouble navigating the unpaved pathways.
