DESTINATION - SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

   Typical BIRD SIGHTINGS
   Provided by SRQ Bird Alert

29 April - Today probably goes down as one of THE BEST days I've had at Ft. Desoto. The number of warblers was just amazing. Myself personally, I could not walk 10 ft. without having to stop and see what just went flying by. I only made it to East Beach Woods, Park Headquarters, and the mulberry tree/fountain area. Goodness only knows what else was out there in other areas of the park.
Cape May Warblers were very plentiful and just right out there in the open (and close) for viewing and pictures as well as Black-Throated Blue Warblers, Blackpoll Warblers, American Redstarts, Northern Waterthrushes, Ovenbirds, Palm Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, Black And White Warblers... It was just amazing. I will be out there again tomorrow for sure. The biggest surprise was a Black-Whiskered Vireo at the fountain area. A first timer (lifer) for me...
Scott Patterson, St. Petersburg

29 April - A good day for birding today as numerous migrants appeared to be moving through North Lido Beach Park. Observed in the park today were numerous common yellowthroat warblers, redstarts, black-throated blue warblers, black and white warblers, cape may warblers. Also noted during the visit were a chuck-will's-widow, lousiana waterthrush, a female Painted Bunting, cooper hawk, bald eagle, opreys, carolina wren, cardinals, gray catbirds, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, ground doves, and an unidentified cuckoo. The beach is active with nesting snowy plovers, least terns, and the black skimmers are being to check the beach for nesting areas.
Unidentified

29 April - Yesterday, Thursday, Margaret and Bill Dunson and 18 members of the Venice Audubon visited Babcock Webb WMA East of Punta Gorda and the find of the day were 2 very colorful Least Bitterns amongst the reeds in the first pond at the entrance. Everyone had good looks and were able to photograph them very well. Then we drove on to the RCW area and were treated to an RCW busily drumming on the plastic pipe that seems to have been placed in most of the RCW nest holes. We also were treated to Brown headed Nuthatches, Bachmans sparrows and Blue Birds. 42 species in a few morning hours of birding. Thanks Margaret and Bill for a great morning!

27 April - I have been waiting for my FOS Swallow-tail Kite and it came late this year but right over my roof while cutting my front lawn at 11 am doing low loop de loops and the camera inside. I'll get a shot yet. Last year it hung around for a long time. Tomorrow with the week off and doing some beach fishing in Venice, I am still hoping for my FOS Magnificent Frigate sighting. The Kite is so nice to watch sailing along with no worries in the world!
Tom Allen, North Port

27 April - Cedar Pt. Park (across from Lemon Bay Hi School, Placida Rd. in Englewood) had a nice variety of warblers this am. They included a Prairie, Black throated blue, several Red starts and Black and Whites as well as numerous Pine and Palm Warblers and an Ovenbird. Also a White eyed and a Red eyed Vireo.
Mary Dommermuth, Englewood

26 April - Bonnie Samuelsen located a Peregrine Falcon on Lido Beach feeding on a Laughing Gull. There are 2 photos I was able to capture after Bonnie alerted me. The bird devoured much of the gull and then flew off in a southerly direction.
Bob Cameron, Lido Key

26 April - Today at around 4 pm I had a major influx of warblers in my back yard. I am situated about 600 yds ( as the warbler flies) from the Gulf. I dont know if they came off the gulf or up the coast but they were falling out of the sky. Redstarts (12), Black and White (20), Parulas (12+), Black throated blue (6), Oven birds (4), Cape May (8-10), Common Yellowthroat (lost count), BlackPolls (LOTS). Holy Moly!!!!! Very Cool

26 April - While boating 1 mile east of Egmont Key, I saw 4 fos Bobolinks heading N. (towards Fort Desoto SP?).
