DESTINATION - SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
Typical BIRD SIGHTINGS Provided by SRQ Bird Alert
8 November - At Lemon Bay Preserve, Kenisco entrance, in South Venice this morning
Bill & I found 44 species, best being 2 SEDGE WRENS in a wetland area with 5 swamp sparrows, a single
young male RT hummingbird, 2 spoonbills, and others. At the intercoastal we saw 2 N. Harriers
migrating south along Manasoto Key along with two sharpies.

6 November - 3:00 pm. North Lido Park. I was treated to a spiraling pair of Bald
Eagles which I have spotted over Lido and St. Armands Keys, all week. Minutes later, a Merlin flew right past
me and aborted it's chase of a Mourning Dove, in the dunes. There were 2 Red Shouldered Hawks and a male
Kestrel between the back trail and mangroves. Also observed: numerous Palm Warblers, BlueGreys, Carolina
Wrens, 2 Eastern Wood Peewees, Ospreys.

5 November - On Thursday eve at 5:30 PM I was at the bird walk in Myakka. There were
app. 80 spoonbills as well as numerous Wood Storks, Blk. Neck Stilts and 14 Am. Avocets.

COMMENT - In response to the "Decurve-billed" Willet - I frequently saw
this bird on Manasota Key in April through July while doing shorebird surveys. It stayed around the south end of Stump
Pass Beach State Park, was usually alone, rarely flew but seemed to feed OK. It's good to know it is still in the area
and obviously doing alright.
Marty Shirley
Last winter a decurved- billed Willet was found on & near Nokomis Beach by several birders that reported their
sightings to me. I don't believe it was reported on the SRQ Bird Alert. What is striking is that it is possible the
Willet reported this year, was the same one that was here last year.
Rett Oren, North Venice
3 November - Today at Pinecraft Park, I came upon a nice mixed flock of birds near
the entrance. Besides the usual; Titmouse and Gnatcatcher, I had Palm, Black and White, Yellow
throated, Black throated green and Pine Warblers, Scarlet Tanager, White eyed and Blue headed Vireo
and Ruby throated Hummingbird. Near the back creek there was a lone Hermit Thrush.

3 November - located the unusual Willet this morning at 10:00 am, a couple of
hundred yards north of the Nokomis Jetty. The mandible gap that Barry Rossheim noted is evident. I sought to make the
bird fly in order to photograph the familiar Willet wing pattern but the bird was very reluctant to do so. I did manage
to make it fly a short distance though. From its reluctance to fly, I am assuming that somwewhere along the line, the
bird suffered more damage than just the decurvature of the bill. Still - it seemed to be getting along quite well.

2 November - I´m from Sweden, having holiday at AMI, Holmes Beach. I had a Piping
Plover yesterday at Holmes Beach, next to "Cafe on the beach". I have some pics on my other computer. Just email me
if you want me to send them to you. I also have to ask... We went to Tampa some days ago. On our way there, i had a
Tundra Swan flying by. I often have them back home in sweden, how common is it here?

2 November - A small raft (31 altogether) of Ring-necked Ducks and Lesser Scaup
were at Ackerman Lake this Monday morning.

2 November - Barry Rossheim also went to Nokomis Beach around 4:30 pm today to look
for the Piping and the Whimbrel. Here is what he had to say about these two species: "I saw the
Piping Plover just south of the volleyball nets. THANKS! I also saw two Dunlin, Black Skimmers, Black-bellied
Plover, Sanderling, Willet, Osprey, Gulls, Terns, Pelicans, and solved the Whimbrel mystery. Near the north
jetty I saw a willet that had a deformed bill that curved downward. It might have been damaged early in his life,
but I think it just grew that way by accident. It was without a doubt a Willet, I am 100% sure, but the bill was
curved downward It had a slight gap between the upper and lower bill. It was not that obvious, that it was anomaly, so
I understand how someone could be fooled. No whimbrel just a freak Willet." Thanks Barry!
Kathryn Young, Sarasota
1 November - I went to Nokomis this morning to check on a report that a Whimbrel
has been seen over the last 2 weeks on the beach between Nokomis Beach Pavilion and south to the Nokomis Jetty, here in
Sarasota County. I did not see the Whimbrel but I did see a very well camouflaged Piping Plover running
along the rack line around 9:30am south of Nokomis Beach Pavilion. If anyone would like to continue to look for the
Whimbrel at this location it has been seen around 3 - 4 pm. Please let us know if you find it.

1 November - Perhaps of interest today at Myakka: 20 wood ducks at a wet spot
just before the bridge on the south side in the back; 3 avocets and one caspian tern at the bird walk; a
group of turkeys spotted from the road when we pulled over for the 2 mile long motorcycle line: just west of the
powerline on the north side.

1 November - This morning I had 20 or so Eastern Bluebirds in the commercial
area of Lakewood Ranch (south of University), a mix of adults and young, with some gorgeous males. Nearby, a dozen or so
Pine Warblers with a lone Tree Swallow overhead.
